War is over! Or: Who owns the kebab?
Germany in fear: Would the application by Udofed, the International Kebab Association based in Turkey, to include the kebab in the EU list of guaranteed traditional specialties lead to a war over the popular meat skewer? In any case, the Association of Turkish Kebab Producers in Europe harshly rejected the International Kebab Association's request. This was because it involved clear guidelines on what could and could not be included in the kebab, which in turn would have led to the end of local kebab varieties, not least the vegetable kebab. In addition, according to Udofed, it should finally be recognized that the kebab comes from Turkey. And this despite the fact that it is officially acknowledged that the kebab variant "Döner" was invented in 1972 by Turkish worker Kadir Nurman in, of course, Berlin!
Not to mention the impact on the meat industry, which produces over 400 tons of doner kebab meat across Europe (per day): The use of the name "Döner" would then also no longer be readily possible in future, which would have led to considerable investment in the development of new names such as "Dönergericht". But now the all-clear: the Turkish organization withdrew its application without giving reasons - freedom for the kebab. Former Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir is just as pleased as food influencer Markus Söder and the 60,000 employees in the kebab industry in Germany. The only question that remains is who we really have to thank for the end of the kebab war? Behind the scenes, people are convinced that this peace could only have come about through the mediation of Donald J. Trump himself! For that he already deserves a vegetable kebab, with everything and spicy!
