This intelligence is just amazing!
After the “bromance” between “Elon” and Donald Trump hit a bit of a rough patch for a while, the two men are apparently back on the same page: Elon Musk, for example, was open to Trump’s suggestion to replace the term “artificial intelligence” with “superintelligence”—and to implement this change within his own company as well. Incidentally, this isn’t the first renaming project Donald Trump has proposed—as we recall, following the tragic crashes of the new Boeing 737 MAX, POTUS stated as early as 2019: “What do I know about branding, maybe nothing (but I did become President!), but if I were Boeing, I would FIX the Boeing 737 MAX, add some additional great features, & REBRAND the plane with a new name.” (Capitalization as in the original, of course).
Boeing has gotten the 737 Max back on track, even without a new name. But in the case of the name “AI,” there may well be reasons for a new name: Trump’s argument that “artificial” sounds like “fake” seems, shall we say, a bit simplistic; but it’s certainly true that “AI” evokes rather negative associations for many people—such as loss of control, unemployment, and endless streams of new nonsense on e-readers every day. So why not give the whole thing a fresh start with a new name? Sometimes that can be not only sensible but necessary (which is why Blackwater is now called Academi). But a new name isn’t a surefire success on its own: ideally, more than just the name changes—in the case of Galeria, that hasn’t worked out to this day.
In that regard, we remain skeptical that the new superintelligence will solve all the problems that artificial intelligence has only just created. On the other hand: What do we really know—we didn’t even make it to the presidency, did we?
And what do you think?
